Classic Philly Cheesesteak Recipe
A Philly cheesesteak is a beloved sandwich that originated in Philadelphia. It's known for its thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, and sometimes sautéed onions and peppers. Here's a classic recipe for making a delicious Philly cheesesteak at home:
Ingredients:
For the Cheesesteak:
- 1 pound ribeye steak or sirloin, thinly sliced (you can also use pre-sliced beef for convenience)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
- 4 slices provolone cheese or American cheese (or a combination)
- 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls (preferably soft Italian rolls)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For Optional Toppings:
- Sautéed mushrooms
- Pickled hot peppers
- Additional cheese (e.g., Cheez Whiz, if you prefer a more classic approach)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Beef:
- Freeze Beef: For easier slicing, freeze the beef for about 30 minutes until it’s firm but not frozen solid. This helps in getting very thin slices.
- Slice Beef: Thinly slice the beef against the grain. If using pre-sliced beef, skip this step.
2. Cook the Vegetables:
- Heat Oil: In a large skillet or griddle, heat the vegetable oil or butter over medium heat.
- Sauté Onions and Peppers: Add the sliced onion and green bell pepper (if using). Cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. If using mushrooms, add them and cook until they are also tender.
3. Cook the Beef:
- Add Beef: Push the cooked vegetables to the side of the skillet or griddle. Add the thinly sliced beef to the empty side and cook, stirring occasionally, until it is browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season: Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Mix the beef with the vegetables.
4. Melt the Cheese:
- Add Cheese: Arrange the cheese slices on top of the beef and vegetables. Cover the skillet with a lid or aluminum foil to help the cheese melt, about 1-2 minutes. Alternatively, you can place the skillet under a broiler for a minute or so to melt the cheese.
5. Toast the Rolls:
- Toast Rolls (Optional): While the cheese is melting, split the hoagie rolls and toast them lightly under a broiler or in a toaster oven, if desired.
6. Assemble the Sandwiches:
- Fill Rolls: Once the cheese is melted, use a spatula to transfer the beef, vegetables, and cheese mixture into the toasted hoagie rolls.
- Serve: Serve immediately, while the cheese is still gooey and the sandwich is warm.
Tips:
- Meat: Ribeye is preferred for its tenderness and flavor, but sirloin can be used as a more affordable alternative. If you can’t find pre-sliced beef, you can ask your butcher to slice it thin for you.
- Cheese: Provolone and American cheese are classic choices, but you can also use Cheez Whiz for a more traditional Philly experience.
- Variations: Feel free to customize with additional toppings like pickled jalapeños or hot peppers, and different types of cheese.
Enjoy your homemade Philly cheesesteak! It’s a delicious, satisfying sandwich that’s perfect for lunch or dinner.
